Over two years ago, in an effort to save some cash and increase productivity around the house, my roomies and I decided to GET RID OF TELEVISION. Extreme I know, but believe it or not we have had a lot of good come out of it and we are still able to watch our favorite shows on a new and improved screen, the computer screen. With sites like Hulu and Netflix that offer fast streaming TV shows and even network websites streaming select shows through their respective websites, why would anyone pay for cable anymore? And I’m sure you have heard of this little site that Google owns, YouTube. YouTube is the second most highly trafficked search engine on the Internet, the newsletter reports, and Google being the top searched website on the Internet. YouTube boasts over 800 million unique users visit YouTube each month and over 72 hours of video uploaded per minute. So how can you get your website a piece of this hot SEO action?

Check out more astounding YouTube statistics at http://www.youtube.com/t/press_statistics.

Step 1. Choose a topic. Keep in mind that your video should be educational and not like a commercial for your company. If you own an art store, try posting crafting videos. Are you a personal trainer? Try posting work out tips. Come up with interesting topics that you feel comfortable talking about.

Step 2: Record your video. No need to hire a professional for this. In fact, your video should look homemade. No fancy equipment needed. You can even use the camera on your phone to make video. Write out bullet points of what you want to cover. Use basic editing software and keep your video simple, concise and under 2 minutes.

Step 3: Optimize for your video for SEO: Make sire that you put your keywords in the following places.

Title of the video- Make sure that the keywords appear twice. Use a title and a subtitle. For example, “healthy” is a key word. Healthy Recipes: Delicious ways to add healthy fiber to your diet.

Description box- Make sure to include a link to your website in the description box in addition to a brief synopsis that includes your keywords.

Tags- This is an easy one. List your main keywords and variants of your keywords.

Step 4: Build viewership: Post links back to your video by sharing it on other social media sites. Embed your videos in your own Facebook page and other social media pages to get traffic. This can also create backlinks for your videos. Allow other people to embed your video so that you can maximize distribution. This is the default anyway, but some people switch it off. Ask for links from people linking to other popular videos within your category. Post your video as a “video reply” to a related video. You can only do this once for any given video, so find the most relevant place for each.

Step 5: Once your video is ready, here are some SEO strategies you can employ. Personalize your YouTube Channel. Fill in the information completely and upload your picture. Don’t just put anything there, think about what you want people to see. One thing that came out of tossing out the TV, was watching a lot more YouTube. We found the original content and interactive nature of the site to be appealing and we wanted in on it. My roommates and I started a sketch comedy channel at YouTube.com/SketchyChicks. Check out our page and what we did to make it unique and eye catching.

SEO isn’t just for your website anymore. It’s for your entire web presence, and social channels are becoming ever more important to that presence. One great option for boosting your SEO is having your own YouTube Channel. Over time, your YouTube Channel will become a valuable resource that will boost your SEO as well as educate your audience.
